Carrier Corporation, the world leader in heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems, has chosen emWare Inc.'s EMIT device-networking software to Internet-enable its top-of-the-line programmable thermostat for remote access, control and monitoring. With Carrier's emWare-enabled Energy Management Interface (EMi) thermostat, homeowners can access a Web page to view the temperature in their home and change temperature, on/off, heat/cool mode and fan settings from any remote Internet connection. emWare's software enables the communication and data transmission to and from the homeowner's EMi and the Internet.
Carrier's EMi thermostat will be introduced into homes this summer through the ComfortChoice program, which is jointly marketed by Carrier and Silicon Energy, the leader in e-business enterprise energy management solutions, to help utilities reduce demand and save energy.
ComfortChoice is a complete energy management solution that allows the utility to adjust the homeowner's temperature setpoint during peak energy demand times to reduce energy usage. At the same time, homeowners will have the ability to retain full flexibility to override the temperature setback directly from their thermostat or remotely over the Web.
"emWare's EMIT architecture is ideal for electronic devices with 8- or 16-bit microcontrollers, like our thermostats, which enables us to bring Internet technology into the home in a cost-effective platform," said Kenneth Fox, vice president and general manager of Carrier Electronics.
"emWare has been very innovative in creating the web of alliances needed to foster a standard networking platform," said Dan Greenberg, Director Embedded Internet and Pervasive Computing Practice for Harbor Research. "Today's announcement, coupled with emWare¿s organization of the Extend The Internet Alliance, shows their dedication to enabling not only device software, but entire device networking applications. For ComfortChoice, emWare has joined with important technology partners to create a complete offering for utilities, an offering which may become the standard architecture for the widely-deployed energy management solutions of the near future."
"We are pleased to be working with Carrier," said Michael D. Nelson, CEO and co-founder of emWare. "emWare believes that connecting and interacting with the devices we use everyday will unlock valuable information that can make these devices easier to use, allow people to save money and even conserve precious resources. Companies are looking for cost-effective ways to add connectivity to their products without the added time or expense of building a proprietary connection and interface. The technology we bring puts Carrier on the cutting-edge, helping them gain a competitive advantage by providing their customers with a better product."
